PISS

A brutal album that feels extremely vulnerable as PISS presents their record through a series of progressive sonic tableaux that is equally powerful and heartbreaking

FUDGE
Michael Kiwanuka

A mostly brilliant effort from Michael Kiwanuka that serves as a showcase for his improvements in songwriting, as well as his ear for great melodies

Dopamine Chamber
Fontaines D.C.

The band incorporates a great many influences, but they make everything their own distinct sound. It is an album of discovery and gets better with each spin on the turntable

Do Not Dare To Dream
Teenage Fanclub

The key term here is immediate, as Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley who keep holding the Teenage Fanclub ship have gone for a more layered concept here, instinctively or intentionally, as the listeners have to keep peeling the layers to get to the essence here, and that peeling is quite worth every listener’s time

The Gem
Julia Jacklin

Reestablishes Julia Jacklin’s spot as one of indie rock’s most intriguing songwriters, but it does lack sonically at moments

Thank You
Mike D 5D

While the Beastie Boys have always been an alternative and experimental force, Thank You pushes the limits as an entirely authentic and genuinely cool album that elevates Mike D’s stature from punky rap hooligan to electronic auteur.

Ride Lonesome
Beck

He seems to double down on the great works of Petty and Dylan, connecting Ride Lonesome to a greater lexicon of melancholic and thoughtful songs that walk the line between folk and roots-based rock

LOVE
Dexys Midnight Runners

With almost a countless number of releases since the opening salvo on Searching Four Young Soul Rebels (1980) it seems that Rowland has gone full circle, and in quite a great manner at that. Hopefully, this is not the last one

There Near
Dinosaur Jr.

There Near is definitely a strong suggestion that the creative musical well in this band is not dried up just yet, and that fans can hopefully look forward to more from their favourite band

It Goes On
Westside Cowboy

I wish I could say to Westside Cowboy: please stop being so overly infatuated with America and embrace your British sensibilities. You absolutely shine when you lean into your Britpop roots and give us highly melodic, crunchy riff-driven two- and-a-half minute rockers

The Mountain Goats

It’s very much a Mountain Goats album. Is it their best? Probably not, but it has a lot of their best qualities and some really great songs that fans will love

Cathedral
John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, Daniel Davies

Carpenter has always excelled at the “less is more” approach to music, but it is here in Cathedral that this discipline is used to build something claustrophobic and heavy. It’s not just music that follows the listener; it surrounds them

Sunshine
Jungle

Continues to amalgamate genres into a cacophony of vibes, artist creativity and collaboration, and tracks made for the dance floor. It’s one of the best records to come out of this year, and it is highly recommended
